Press Release
Most, 10 February 2010 – In 2009, companies in the Czech Coal Group (Litvínovská uhelná a.s., Vršanská uhelná a.s., and Czech Coal Services a.s.) supported the region by an additional amount of more than CZK 30 million. Under the Regional Policy project, they have provided almost CZK 400 million over the time of its existence.
The Group continued its co-operation with towns and villages in the Chomutov and Most areas last year. Most, Litvínov, Jirkov, Meziboří, Lom, Vrskmaň, Strupčice, Louka u Litvínova, Mariánské Radčice, Vysoká Pec, Lišnice, Polerady and Malé Březno used the financial gifts.
The Spolužití [Coexistence] Programme has been part of the Group’s regional policy for several years. Last year the grant scheme focused on enhancing education in the region. Dozens of secondary and tertiary educational institutions in the Most area applied for support for their projects. In the end, the Czech Coal Group contributed to the implementation of projects worth several million crowns; amongst others, it supported grammar schools in Most and Litvínov, the Most integrated secondary school, and the Most facilities of The Institute of Finance and Administration and of VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava.
As part of supporting education in the region, last year Vršanská uhelná became the official partner of the Nadace Student foundation, the activities of which are geared towards contributing to the education of socially disadvantaged children. This step was taken as a result of long-standing financial co-operation between the Czech Coal Group and the foundation.
Applications for the extraction companies’ assistance in various areas are received continuously throughout a year, and are evaluated on a quarterly basis. In 2009, assistance was provided to, for example, children’s homes in the region, cultural and heritage institutions, sports clubs, including FK Baník Most and HC Benzina Litvínov, Podkrušnohorské technické muzeum [a Krušné hory technical museum] and other entities. Two activities running for the whole year, Barborka and Prokůpek for Children and a series of Coexistence concerts, are also related to this part of the Regional Policy project.
The Czech Coal Group’s companies are major partners for the Economic and Social Council of the Most Area and the Ústí Region, the District Chamber of Economy, The Most Environmental Centre for the Krušné hory Area, and the Most Hippodrome.
The Czech Coal Group includes Czech Coal a.s., a trader in energy commodities, mainly brown coal, electrical energy and greenhouse gas emissions allowances, and Litvínovská uhelná a.s., which manages the largest coal deposit in the Czech Republic, Vršanská uhelná a.s., whose coal reserves within the mining limits will last until 2058, Czech Coal Services, a.s., which provides shared services to the extraction companies, and a number of other service companies. REN Power CZ, a.s., a major investor in renewable energy sources, and FitCraft Production a.s., a prominent Czech manufacturer of photovoltaic systems, were included into the Group last year.
