Brown Coal Power Generation in the Czech Republic

Before 1989, Czechoslovakia was based on an extensive economy with a large share of heavy industry. For this reason, neither coal mining nor the energy sector operated efficiently, and placed an excessive burden on the environment. Since 1990, coal extraction and coal-fired energy plants have been undergoing extensive transformation. Initially, the transformation was influenced by the government. Since the first private investors bought into these sectors in the latter half of the 1990s, the transformation has also been driven by the need for competitiveness over the long term, and the need for social acceptance by the stakeholders.

The fact that coal extraction from surface mines and coal-based energy generation are not a product of socialism is borne out by their effective and long operation in countries that started to adopt the concept of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility decades before our country did. Not only Germany, the UK, Greece or Spain will rely on coal-based energy, as a sustainable transitional technology offering a bridge to other energy resources, for the next tens to hundreds of years.
