Environmental Protection and Reclamation

Environmental Protection

Companies’ operations can affect, to a varying extent, each of the components of environmental protection, i.e ., air quality control, water management, waste and packaging disposal, handling of chemical substances and preparations, etc. As in previous years, in 2010 care for the environment preferentially focused on preventing the emergence of the potential negative impacts of the extraction operations and related activities. Utmost attention was devoted primarily to the areas in which the level of emissions produced by the operations could be controlled.

Reclamation – Landscape and Environment Regeneration

In addition to its mining activities, the Czech Coal Group is engaged in reclamation and is systematically preparing in advance to remove traces of mining activities over the long-term. This demonstrates that an effective solution and controlled mining with a well-thought-out approach to subsequent decontamination and reclamation can bring things to mining regions whose scope and use exceed the means of ordinary investors. The reclamation process not only creates a new landscape in the form of agricultural land and cultivation, forests, expanses of water and streams, but also lands specially designated for recreation and sporting purposes. New landscape elements arise, such as lakes and artificial elevated dumps which introduce new uses for these lands for the cities and municipalities with which they come in contact which are ordinarily quite different from the way the ground was used before the initiation of mining.

Reclamation completed by 31 December 2010, that is, the sum of the areas that had been reclaimed under the current and previous organisational arrangements, was 6,959 hectares. Reclamation in progress, including reclamation completed in the respective year, was 1,229 hectares.
